Dream Big for a Book!

I am excited to announce to you all that I will shortly be self publishing a book of my own! It’s a collection of short stories that I’ve been working on over the years. I’ve finally got enough to compile into something that I can share with others and that is what I have decided to do!

The short stories are all fairy tale retellings and continuations of classic favorites including Snow White, The Little Mermaid, The Wild Swans, and last but certainly not least The Goose Girl. I am excited about this and I hope you all are as well.

As things get closer to completion I will keep you all updated with things like book covers, titles, and a sure to be exciting summary. In anticipation of all of that I wanted to share a short excerpt from my Little Mermaid continuation entitled A Mermaid’s Tale:

Adam’s bare feet splashed through the ocean water as he made his way back towards the shore. He smiled to himself remembering the feel of the ocean and wind whipping past his face as he’d rode the waves of that day. Now the sun was close to setting and he needed to get back to his house before dark.

When he reached the shore he set his surfboard down to look across the beach he’d nicknamed Utopia. He savored the feeling of solitude that the beach brought him as he examined the stretch of trees that separated this beach from the main one. Few people knew about the hidden beach behind the forest and Adam wanted to keep it that way. Utopia was the one place he could escape the rest of the world and its troubles.

His eyes scanned the small beach taking it all in one last time before he had to leave for the night. His gaze passed over a rocky area and as he was turning away he glanced something move from the corner of his eye. Curiosity won over the need to leave and he jogged over to the jagged rocks that helped to hide Utopia. There, clutching on for life was a young woman dressed in a tattered gown.

Adam crouched down and gently pushed aside a strand of her long brown hair revealing her unconscious face beneath. ‘Where did she come from?’ he wondered thinking back on the day. Adam had spent most of the day at the beach surfing and he felt like he would have noticed if anyone washed up on the shore like this.

As Adam tried to pull her away from the rocks he realized that she must have passed out while holding on to them, her grip was powerful and it took a good deal of strength for him to pry her hands from the rock. He lifted her up into his arms and glanced back at his surfboard longingly, he’d have to come back for it tomorrow and pray the tide didn’t wash it away.

His car was parked close by the entrance to the beach and after strapping the girl into the passengers seat he drove home. Adam lived by himself in a small house that suited his needs. It was rumored that long ago it use to be a temple but years of remodeling had turned it into more of a home than anything. Remnants of what could be called a temple were scattered around the land surrounding it and sometimes Adam wondered if the rumors really were true.

He dried the girl off as best he could and settled her in his bed before making a bed for himself on the couch. As Adam stared up at the ceiling of his living room his mind wandered through the events of the day finally settling on the girl, who was she? Where had she come from? He shook his head clearing the thoughts away, hopefully those questions would be answered in the morning.

When Rayne opened her eyes the first feeling to hit her was warmth, the sun’s rays poured in through a slit in the drapes hanging by her bed. She closed her eyes savoring the feeling of the sun for a moment.

Then reality hit her with such force she shot up in the bed sending pillows flying in all directions. Where was she? Why was she here? She looked around the sparsely decorated room and anger flared up in her. She shouldn’t be here, she was suppose to be back in the sea… The sea! She threw the comforter off of her body and stared down at her legs in horror.

What was going on here? This wasn’t supposed to happen. Tears welled up in Rayne’s eyes, some one must have pulled her from the water before she’d finished changing back. The tears were replaced by fury as she realized that that someone was in this house. She leapt out of bed, scarcely aware of the tattered gown she was still in, and stormed through the building.

I was born in Las Vegas but moved to Texas as soon as I could and have lived there ever since. I currently work at a library where I spend inordinate amounts of time surrounded by books. Along with work I am also attending college full time and am in the process of writing my first novel. I am a tea and coffee addict and am rarely seen without one or the other while writing, working, or studying. When I’m not busy with life I can be found spending time with my family, cooking, and singing with my lovable but oftentimes annoying Cockatoo named Peekie.

  1. Dream Big! When will we be able to buy this? I checked on Amazon and … No luck… Yet?

  2. Hey Iain! The book is not out yet, I’m almost done with the last big draft of it so things should start moving a little faster now. I’m glad to see your so interested! I’ll be sure to let you know as soon as it’s out.

Also, thanks again for the books I’m eager to get into them! And to answer one of your earlier questions about all the break-in’s a little known fact about me is that I love heist books so break-in’s are always a plus in my book. And they often end up leading characters into to exciting adventures. : )

  3. I have to admit that right now I am really enamored with the idea of retellings / continuations of classic fairytales and other similar classic stories (because the book I just finished was…. Kind of? Well, not the same but same feeling anyway). I am also interested to see what you have in store for artwork! On the top of your webpage right now is this great sepia tone sketch kind of thing of an old fashioned cityscape… And this is something that looks right out of my imagination. So, like I said, artwork! Exciting! Plus of course… Dream Big. Always perfect advice.

I really like heist movies somehow… And now you have me thinking if there are any break-in’s in the first three Kitty Hawk books (not to mention the fifth book… Soon to be released.). Good news! There are!

And now I see you have a new site! Have to check that out now. Wait… Should I reply here… Or?

  4. I love fairy tale re-tellings and continuations which is why I decided to write some of my own. I blame Robin McKinley for my addiction, her book Beauty was my first taste of re-tellings and I fell in love instantly.

I like the idea of being able to flesh out and provide a deeper look into the characters in fairy tales. I especially love the idea of seeing what happens after the tale has ended, which is the premise for a few of my stories. I want to know what happens after ever after, do the characters struggle with new issues now? Take for instance the Beast in Beauty and the Beast, I always thought he may deal with some PTSD or something similar.

As for the cover art I’ve got a friend and a model lined up to do pictures for it so it may be a more realistic cover than a drawn one, but who knows what it will end up like after Photoshop. The blog header is like something from a fairy tale, that’s why I love it- it’s inspiring.

As for heist movies they are the best, I’ve read some really great heist novels too. Have you read Heist Society by Ally Carter or The Heist by Janet Evanovich? Both are fantastic. And more break-in’s for Kitty? I’m excited!

As for the replying, feel free to do it wherever is easier for you. I’ve got access to both so it’s no problem for me.

    • I totally agree! (About being able to take a deeper look at characters…) And not just in fairy tales, I think, but modern tales. In the book I just finished there was a bit of Dune and Sherlock Holmes too (yah, him again – it’s not a Kitty Hawk book though) and I was so excited to explore really minor things like “what did Jabez Wilson do AFTER leaving 221B Baker Street in the Red Headed League???

I might worry in fairytales that the “ever after” might be … Well, like you say… do they struggle with some new issues now?

Realistic covers are awesome too! For some reason I though something like School for Good and Evil, two covers I love, but photo realistic will be really cool!

I really like heists where they do something really clever and unexpected to get away. Like in Inside Man or something.

      Heist Society… I like the sound of that….. And A Mermaid’s Tale.

      • You added some Dune into a book? Wow I never thought about doing that, and to put Sherlock in too sounds interesting (there is nothing wrong with giving the world more Sherlock Holmes). The aftereffects of stories have always fascinated me and I’m always excited to see any new stories that deal with that.

The School for Good and Evil’s covers are great. I really like them. For my cover I never really thought about doing art for some reason I always pictured it having realism to it. Did the Kitty Hawk covers turn out like you’d imagined them?

One of my favorite heists was the one they pulled off in Ocean’s Eleven. When I finished watching that movie for the first time I wanted to watch it again just so I could figure out all the details. It made me really want to write a heist novel.
